WALL Street stocks tumbled yesterday along with long term bonds as a run up in gold prices stirred fears of inflation.

WALL Street stocks tumbled yesterday along with long term bonds as a run up in gold prices stirred fears of inflation.

The Dow Jones average of industrial stocks closed down 31.07 points at 5,373.99, reversing direction after five consecutive days of all time highs.

Declines led advances by about 6 to 5 on the New York Stock Exchange, with 1,077 up, 1,271 down and 750 unchanged. Big Board volume totalled 418.49 million shares, against 458.75 million on Thursday.

The Nasdaq composite index rose 2.97 to 1,072.43.
