Shares regained some lost ground and ended the day near an all-time high, gaining support from Wall Street and the expiry of German stock options. Dealers expect further advances next week after the IBlS went through 3,800 level in after-hours trading.

French shares held their gains in late trade with the index being boosted by a rise in Alcatel after a bullish chairman's profit forecast.

Shares closed up almost 1 per cent in record volumes follow the expiry of options and futures contracts and amid general optimism. Dealers said the rise was driven by gains on the bond market and optimism over Italy's chances of being in at the beginning of EMU.
