Stocks fell sharply in New York yesterday, pushing the Nasdaq composite index down nearly 200 points, as investors fretted about interest rates and continued their flight from high-tech issues.
The Nasdaq fell 199.94, or 5.6 per cent, to close at 3,385.07. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 168.97, or 1.6 per cent, to close at 10,367.78. Earlier in the session, both indicators had fallen more than 200 points.
Broader stock indicators were also lower. The Standard and Poor's 500 fell 29.06 to 1,383.07.
NYSE volume totalled 972.31 million shares, against 889.82 million in the previous session.
