Internet address system ‘creaking’

Waterford Institute of Technology’s Telecommunications Software and Systems Group (TSSG) hosted a summit on IPv6 in Dublin Castle this week which attracted 150 delegates.

They heard how the current system of internet addresses is creaking under pressure and overcapacity. The introduction of IPv6 will greatly increase the number of internet addresses available, but will also support the introduction of new types of services.

“By the end of 2011, people wanting new public IPv4 addresses who wish to offer services on the internet – such as deploying a new secure web server for e-commerce – will find this very difficult, or extremely expensive,” said Mícheál Ó Foghlú of TSSG. “To thrive the internet needs to grow, to grow it needs new addresses.”
