Exports to countries outside the EU fell back slightly in April, according to figures released by the Central Statistics Office.
The value of Irish exports to non-EU countries stood at £1.19 billion lower than the record exports of March but still 35 per cent higher than the £886 million recorded in April, 1997.
The US accounted for more than half the increase while there was a sharp drop in exports to Malaysia.
Imports were valued at £1.06 billion, 11 per cent higher than the £951 million in April 1997.
Imports of electrical machinery rose 67 per cent and computer equipment 35 per cent. A large part of the increase came from the US and from Singapore, although imports from Thailand fell.
