Jefferson Smurfit Corporation's merger with Stone Container has received approval from the EU Commission. The Commission has decided the merger is compatible with the common market and with various merger regulations.

Last week, the merger cleared American antitrust legislation and now only needs the approval of both sets of shareholders. If this is forthcoming, the merger will be completed in the third or fourth quarter of the year, according to Jefferson Smurfit.
