THE Economic and Social Research Institute has named Prof Brendan J Whelan as the new director of the institute. Prof Whelan (right) will succeed Prof Kieran A. Kennedy, who will retire in October after 25 years in the post.

Prof Whelan (47) has been a member of the ESRI's research staff since 1969 and head of its survey unit since 1978.
