Cork received an employment boost yesterday when the Taoiseach, Mr Ahern, announced 220 new jobs in five companies spanning financial software and electronic sectors. Pharmaceutical giant, Novartis - which already employs 300 people in Ringaskiddy - is to take on a further 96 staff, while German software company, Infor Business Solutions, is to create 50 new jobs with the establishment of a centre in Cork.

WPB Electronic Manufacturing also plans to create 25 new jobs at its Carragaline plant in a £450,000 expansion, and Swiss company, IMTF, is to place a software development centre in Cork, also creating 25 new jobs. In addition, Irish software company Seabrook Research is to double its workforce to 40 after winning a $1.3 million (€1.21 million) contract to supply software to De Beers Industrial Diamonds in Shannon.
