DIANA, Princess of Wales, is now more wealthy than her former husband, the Prince of Wales, according to a new survey of Britain's richest people.
Diana shares the 916th richest spot with cookery guru, Ms Delia Smith. Both women are worth £17 million, says the Sunday Times Rich List, which describes itself as "the definitive guide to Britain's wealth".
However, both women are dwarfed by the £3 billion fortune of the newly- crowned richest Briton, financier Mr Joe Lewis. Mr Lewis, a reclusive businessman who runs his international empire from the Bahamas, paid £40 million for a large chunk of Glasgow Rangers earlier this year.
Virgin boss Mr Richard Branson may have failed to conquer the globe by balloon but his shrewd business deals have pushed him up the list from joint 12th place to joint fifth place. His estimated wealth has more than doubled in the last 12 months, from £800 million to £1.7 billion.
The princess is now better off than Prince Charles after benefiting from her father's estate when he died and receiving between £15 million and £20 million in her divorce settlement, said the Sunday Times.
This is Diana's first appearance in the newspaper's newly-expanded annual survey, which restricted itself to the richest 500 people in previous years. Prince Charles does not make the list because most of his wealth is counted under his mother's name.
