US President George W Bush won a clear political victory last night when the evenly-split Senate approved his tax-cutting budget resolution despite bitter Democratic opposition.

Republicans won the vote by a slim margin. Most Democrats bitterly opposed the resolution, accusing it of favouring special interests, not spending enough on education and the environment and threatening a return to high deficits.

The Republican-led House of Representatives approved the document by a thin 14-vote margin Wednesday.
