BUNDESBANK board member, Mr Peter Schmidhuber visited Dublin yesterday for a series of private meeting at the Institute of European Affairs. He said he thought EMU would start on time and that, while the strong position of the pound within the ERM grid was a problem, it should not prevent Ireland joining the single currency. He also said the German government had the power to keep Germany's budget deficit in the required range of 3 per cent, despite the scepticism of the IMF.
