Ms C from Tallaght paid off her mortgage last year but now has the sole responsibility for making sure that her home and contents are insured. Her lender, Irish Permanent, no longer has any stake in the property.

Instead of simply renewing with the same insurer she has always used, she decided to ask broker, GIS (Ireland) about home cover. The result was a quote for £111 instead of £159. "The difference in premium amounts to nearly £50 and more importantly the new cover is more than twice that for the same price as offered by the Irish Permanent," writes Ms C.
