More than 120 staff have been placed on short-time working at the Volex plant in Castlebar, Co Mayo, which manufactures computer cable assembly systems for the worldwide market. The three-day week is the second blow in a month at the factory, which employs 800 and is one of the largest employers in Mayo. In the second half of April, 150 workers - mostly temporary staff - were let go at the factory because of a downturn in the world market for telecommunications.
