AIB becomes the first of the leading Irish stocks to report interim results when it releases its figures for the six months to June 30th, 1998 on Wednesday.

The results are expected to show strong growth across the board with year-on-year comparisons benefitting from a full six-month contribution from WBK, the Polish bank in which AIB has a 60 per cent stake, and Dauphin Deposit Corporation. The £840 million acquisition of the US bank was not completed until July 1997 so it did not contribute to first-half profits last year.

Analysts are expecting pre-tax profits of around £350 million, a 44.5 per cent increase on the £242.2 million recorded in the first half of 1997. Earnings per share are forecast to rise to 26.5 pence from 22.3 pence a year earlier, a 19 per cent increase.
