TEENAGER Philip Neville could he thrown into England's Euro 96 campaign right from the off, as doubts grow about the fitness of his older brother Gary. He missed training for the third day running with a nagging thigh strain which could force Terry Venables to redraft his plans for Saturday's curtain-raiser against Switzerland.

Newcastle striker Les Ferdinand is another struggling to make the frame with a nagging groin problem. But Arsenal defender Tony Adams boosted England when he shook off his calf injury to resume a full contribution to both yesterday's sessions behind closed doors at Bisham Abbey.

So now, as the squad hope they have put the affair of flight CX25l behind them, the only problem they face is which Neville? Ironically, 19-year-old Phil, who made his England debut at left back in the 3-0 win against China in Beijing, displaced Gary on the right flank in Manchester United's run-in to the Double.

But the elder of England first fraternal double act for 26 years has been Venables' first choice in eleven of the last 12 games since his debut against Japan in the Umbro Cup a year and two days ago.

Venables' alternatives to using Phil, who switched to the right in the disappointing non-international in Hong Kong, include Gareth Southgate and Sol Campbell.

Switzerland officials have reacted with anger after their European Championship squad were refused permission to train at Wembley - because of a dress rehearsal.

Coach Artur Jorge had planned to put his players through their paces at the twin towers today,, 48 hours before Saturday's opening game against England. But Jorge discovered just two day5 ago that his men could not train at the stadium because of a full scale rehearsal for the tournament's opening ceremony.

And Guido Cornella, vice president of the Swiss FA, made it clear that Jorge and his players were far from impressed., "When the coach planned his programme, he had certain thoughts about training in his mind," said Cornella, speaking during the team's first training session at Cheshunt, Hertfordshire - six hours after their arrival at nearby Stanstead airport.

"We thought that everything was fixed up until two days ago and we've been trying to sort it out since then. When we phoned the Football Association in London the said they had sent us a fax weeks ago, to tell us but we didn't receive it.

That just isn't very good. We've tried for the last two days to fix it and even asked if we could go tomorrow morning instead but we've been told the first available time is 3pm on Friday.

Meanwhile, Sion midfielder Patrick Sylvestre was called up late yesterday to replace Christophe Ohrel of Lausanne, who was ruled out of the tournament after breaking his toe in training on Monday.

Ohrel had been expected to play a key role 09 the right side of the Swiss midfield and his absence will be a major blow for Jorge.
