World number one Tiger Woods will make his Alfred Dunhill Cup debut in the 16nation tournament in St Andrews on October 8th. Six of the world's top eight players are on the card.

Woods will be joined by Masters and British Open champion Mark O'Meara and John Daly, who played in the Cup-winning team in 1993. The United States has won the event three times in its 14-year history.

Defending champions South Africa are aiming to take the bulk of the £1 million purse again this year, having not made any changes to its 1997 winning line-up. David Frost and Retief Goosen will play alongside world number three Ernie Els.

Each member of the winning team will pocket £100,000. The 16 teams will play a roundrobin format over the first three days, with the leading team in each of the four groups going through to the semi-final on October 11th. The final is scheduled for the afternoon.
