Unheralded Americans Mark Brooks and Matt Gogel held the lead on 204 after the third round of the AT&T Pro-Am in California yesterday. Brooks shot a 66 and Gogel a 67 to leave both players one shot clear of Fijian Vijay Singh, who shot 72.

Tiger Woods and David Duval had contrasting days. Woods needed a good round to stay in touch, and he duly produced it, shooting 68 to lie on 209, still well in contention. But Duval looked set to miss the cut (which is made after the third round): his second-round 76 was followed by a disastrous round of 75 yesterday.

Keith Nolan failed to make the cut despite a good round of 70 yesterday, which left him on 223 overall. He had a fine first nine of three-under 33, shooting three birdies and no bogeys. But he came back in 37 after bogeys at the 13th and 18th more than cancelled out his birdie at the 10th.
