Wicklow seek Dempsey

Wicklow may ask Michael Dempsey to take over as the county's senior football manager

Wicklow may ask Michael Dempsey to take over as the county's senior football manager. The post became vacant when Moses Coffey completed his term after the defeat to Galway in the All-Ireland qualifiers.

Only three names have been submitted by Wicklow clubs - Coffey, Gale Dunne, the county's under-21 manager, and Peter O'Neill.

But the Wicklow County Board have already put contingency plans in motion. They have had several meetings with Dempsey, who guided O'Hanrahans to their third Carlow senior football title in a row last Sunday, having brought them to a first Leinster title last season.

While Dempsey is committed to leading O'Hanrahans in the defence of their provincial title, Wicklow feel they may be able to get a commitment from the Laois man as the National League does not get under way until February.

For next month's O'Byrne Cup Wicklow county board chairman Donal McGillicuddy will manage the side.

Dempsey finds himself in somewhat of a dilemma for O'Hanrahan's opening defence of their provincial title when they play Kilkenny champions Muchalee. A publican based in Kilkenny, Dempsey helped coach and train the Muchalee side to the county title earlier this year. However, on this occasion his loyalty will be with the Carlow champions.

Meanwhile, the Wexford County Board are unlikely to carry out an investigation into a number of incidents which occurred towards the end of the Oulart-the-Ballagh and Faythe Harriers senior hurling championship quarter-final last Sunday. Faythe Harriers players and officials disputed a decision by Dickie Murphy close to the end. The replay has been rescheduled for Wexford Park this Saturday.
