Club career: Started out as an apprentice at York City under Wilf McGuinness, going on to play for seven years with the club. Scored 28 goals in his final season, earning him a £100,000 move to QPR. Had spells at French club Le Havre (with Frank Stapleton), Brighton, Sunderland (where his goals helped the club reach the 1992 FA Cup final), Millwall, Oxford United, before finishing his league career back at Brighton.

International career: Won 23 caps, 11 as sub, between 1985 and 1993, making his debut against Italy at Dalymount Park. Was a member of the 1988 European Championship finals and 1990 World Cup squads. Scored four goals for Ireland, including two away to Turkey in a 1991 European Championship qualifier.

Where is he now? Just turned 38 Byrne is now joint player-manager at Sussex League side Shoreham and runs Brighton's Under-12 School of Excellence. He is a year away from completing a course in podiatry at the University of Brighton - hopes to set up his own practice.
