Huddersfield striker Alex Dyer burst West Ham's League Cup bubble with a brilliant header to seal a 10 win in the first leg at the McAlpine Stadium. Dyer, who scored in Huddersfield's 2-2 draw with Ipswich on Saturday, rose unmarked at the far post in the 75th minute to beat the lunging Ludek Miklosko with ease.

But Harry Redknapp's side only had themselves to blame for the defeat, with strikers John Hartson and Paul Kitson guilty of wasting several clear-cut chances.

Kitson, replaced by Iain Dowie at half-time, spurned the Hammers best chance of the game when he was denied by keeper Steve Francis after 21 minutes.

Former England striker Mark Hateley masterminded a memorable second round victory over Crystal Palace as third division Hull hung on grimly to Duane Darby's first-half strike.

It remains to be seen if the Tigers, 90th in the league, can complete the job at Selhurst Park in two weeks time in the return leg.

City thwarted everything that the Premiership side, lacking guile without summer signings Attilio Lombardo and Paul Warhurst, could throw at them to protect Darby's instinctive goal midway through the first-half - set up by Hateley's knock down.

Republic of Ireland midfielder Gareth Farrelly scored his first senior goal for Everton to sink Scunthorpe at Glanford Park last night. Farrelly's strike after 36 minutes was enough to give the Blues their first victory in the League Cup since 1993.

Blackpool will be scenting another League Cup shock after they added Coventry to their collection of scalps at Bloomfield Road.

In the first round the second division side beat Manchester City 1-0 at home before winning on penalties at Maine Road.

This time Dave Linighan was the Seasiders' hero as he scored the only goal of the second round first leg after 76 minutes.

Keith Branagan spared Bolton's brushes with a superb display to keep out third division Leyton Orient. The Premiership side will take a 3-1 lead into the second leg after goals from Andy Todd, Per Frandsen and John McGinlay.

But the real hero was the Republic of Ireland international Branagan who made a handful of blinding saves in the second half to maintain Bolton's lead.

Paulo Wanchope's goal just before half-time was enough to send Derby into the second leg with their sights set firmly on reaching the third round. The Costa Rican striker, making his first appearance of the season following a cartilage operation, pounced in the 43rd minute after Jonathan Hunt had played a long ball through the middle.

Wanchope reacted quicker than Andy Harris as he gained possession before finding the net with a low shot just inside the post. It was cruel luck on the second division side who, up until that point, had given as good as they received from their Premiership opponents.

Premiership strugglers Barnsley saved themselves from an upset when two late goals wrecked Chesterfield's dream of glory. The second division team were threatening to pull off another shock until Barnsley scored twice in an incredible finale to a pulsating first leg second round tie.

Teenager Carl Cort scored his third goal in two games to virtually guarantee Wimbledon their place in the third round after they beat Millwall 5-1. His first came from the penalty spot after 23 minutes.
