On the third weekend of the Leinster Senior League, Clontarf reduced Old Wesley to a quivering wreck at Castle Avenue yesterday. While this competition is seen as the ideal opportunity for teams to experiment with new players and patterns of play, Wesley must be concerned at their appalling form in the last seven days.
They could never get in a blow as Clontarf's new recruits scored 48 points without reply. Mick Coughlan (3), Ian Stewart (2) and Paul Noble (2) crossed for seven of their eight tries.
The prodigious Clontarf kicker Richie Murphy didn't need to be at his best from placed balls.
Beaten narrowly by Clontarf last week, Blackrock College came out on the right side of a close call with St Mary's College at Templeville Road. Leo Cullen and John McGowan got their tries and David Lynagh did well enough with his kicking to earn both points for the Stradbrook men, despite the accuracy and agility of Richard Ormond who accounted for all of St Mary's points from a try, a conversion and five penalties.
Lansdowne and Skerries were the other bonanza boys when putting seven tries each past the students of UCD and Dublin University on Saturday. Wing colleagues Marcus Dillon (3) and Billy Casey (2) led the charge out wide for Lansdowne. At Holmpatrick, Jim Dempsey touched down twice and converted five times.
