A superb undefeated century by Hendy Wallace guided Phoenix to victory over The Hills in last Saturday's final at Anglesea Road of the Leinster Senior 50-overs League, sponsored by Lewis Traub. Batting at number four, Wallace was the mainstay of the side, and blasted six sixes and eight fours in the course of his indomitable innings.
Wallace reached his 50 off 72 balls and his 100 off 102 deliveries. Phoenix took 42 runs from the final three overs, mostly at the expense of Barry Archer and Mark Clinton.
Wallace's powerful batting made all the difference to the innings of Phoenix, for only Jeremy Bray, Anu Bhandari, Imran Masood and Gary Black managed to get into double figures. Luke Clinton, Joseph Clinton and Matt Dwyer took a brace of wickets each. Dwyer was The Hills' top-scorer, with 46 invaluable runs, and thus was the second most successful batsman of the match. Jaffer Hussain and John Atkinson did the early damage before Gary Black rubbed out the lower with 3 for 28. This was a deserved win for Phoenix, but all concerned will agree that a debt of gratitude is owed to Wallace.
