David Wallace, the most surprising omission from the original 30-man squad, has been called up to the World Cup panel as a replacement for his fellow Munster backrower Alan Quinlan.

Quinlan suffered a dislocated a shoulder the day after his parents arrived in Adelaide while scoring the only try of the match.

"Alan Quinlan's World Cup is over," were the slightly chilling words of Eddie O'Sullivan in confirming the worst. "Unfortunately he has dislocated his shoulder. It was relocated on the side of the pitch but obviously the damage is too bad to continue in the tournament and we have made arrangements for David Wallace to fly out and we're going through the paper work with Rugby World Cup to make that happen.

"He played a crucial role in today's game. Obviously he scored the only try of the match and he's pretty disappointed. Scoring the winning try is the way to go out, I suppose, but it's not much consolation to him."

Quinlan will have to relinquish his accreditation for the tournament, which will prevent him from entering the team dressing-room on match days, but he will be allowed to remain on with the squad for the rest of their stay in Australia and is expected to do so.
