Shane Kelly, 18, the Leitrimborn jockey, recorded his second successive Cork Dry Gin Ulster Cesarewitch at Downpatrick yesterday when he scored on the Joe Canty-trained Veritable Gallery to bring his seasonal tally to 10. The seven-year-old gelding, bringing Curragh trainer Canty his third winner this season, drew steadily clear from the two furlong pole to come home four lengths ahead of the favourite Comrade Chinnery.

John Shortt picked up a five-day ban (September 3rd-7th) for improper riding aboard Men of Ninetyeight after the well-supported favourite was collared close home by the former Richard Hannon-trained Wet Patch in the opening Honeypot Maiden Hurdle. This provided in-form rider, Garrett Cotter, with his 12th winner this season.

David Casey and Brian Bowens, victorious members of the fourman Irish jockeys' team in Australia earlier this month, picked up a winner apiece before the large bank holiday crowd.

Casey made virtually all aboard the Willie Mullins-trained Touring-Turtle to win the Eastwood Bookmakers Handicap Hurdle, while Bowens made all on Hillhead, trained by his father, Victor, to land the Parce Puer Stimulus Beginners Chase.
