Medinah, August 1999 - Woods staggered off the 18th hole on the final day like a punch-drunk boxer. But that's the physical and mental exertion that a duel with Spanish teenager Sergio Garcia, playing in the match ahead, had on the world number one.

Indeed, a play-off had seemed the best outcome that Woods - unable to exert his usual dominance on the rest of the field due to the poor state of the greens - could expect when he faced a vicious 10-foot putt on the 71st hole. In a putting action that holds no fear, however, and with a regularity that evades every other player, Woods drilled the par-saving putt into the hole and also parred the final hole to finish a shot clear of Garcia.
