Girls Interprovincials:Lisa Maguire staged a spectacular fighting finish to beat Munster's Sarah Cunningham on the final green and help Ulster off to a flying start at Bangor yesterday.

The holders went on to clinch a convincing 7-1 victory and move closer to taking the title for a fourth successive season.

Ulster meet Leinster in today's second round, the latter having edged Connacht by one point.

Once again the Maguire twins from Slieve Russell took the spotlight. But, after combining to give Ulster a 2-0 lead from the morning foursomes they had to display tenacious battling qualities in the singles.

Scratch handicapper Lisa (13) was in deep trouble at three down after four holes but she completed a gritty comeback by winning the closing three holes on birdie, par, par.

Leona, the new French Under-18 champion, was next up and also had to stage a fightback before registering a similar one-hole win over Sarah Crowe.
