UCD fail to ignite

Having twice beaten UCD in the Leinster League this season, Trinity maintained their winning streak over their rival undergraduates in the Colours hockey match at Belfield yesterday and will go to Belfast on Saturday with some buoyancy for the Irish Senior Cup replay against Parkview.

UCD, though, failed to ignite and while they gained 10 short corners to Trinity's two, they registered only a goal in the dying stages. Against the flow of play in the early exchanges, Trinity poached the lead. Michael Brett surged from the back, forcing John Lush to be fouled, and Jason Milne converted the penalty stroke. Gareth Hinds pounced to put his side two up by the interval and Milne sent Alaister Cullen through to increase the margin 20 minutes into the second half.

It was too much for UCD to come back, especially with Brett and Stephen Bredin excelling in the winners' defence, which was breached only by Peter Fox from a corner.

As was the case at Belfield, the participants also knew each other well in the decider of the Leinster Schools Senior League at Serpentine Avenue where 14 Monkstown players were in the starting line-ups. St Andrew's, however, carried the greater resources, defeating Newpark 5-2 to take the title. St Andrew's, who led 3-0 at half-time, had their goals from irrepressible youth internationals Justin Sherriff (2) and Ian Allen (3, including one from the spot). Cliff Bailey squeezed in a penalty in reply and Carl Breadin also snicked home a consolation score.
