UCD 2 Dublin City 0: UCD deservedly booked their place in the third round with two brilliantly-executed second-half goals by skipper Tony McDonnell and winger Stephen Hurley earning them a comfortable victory over first division Dublin City at Belfield Park last night.

The students came close to breaking the deadlock on 55 minutes when a header by central defender Brian Shortall was brilliantly pushed round the post by goalkeeper Brendan Kennedy.

But there was little Dublin City could do about the goal which gave College the lead on 66 minutes. Defender Mick O'Donnell threaded a perfect pass to Pat McWalter on the left. His low cross allowed Robbie Martin to sell a perfect dummy which outwitted the visitors' defence.

Skipper McDonnell, who was following up, then saw his first effort blocked by Kennedy but he was able to drive the rebound into the roof of the net from six yards.
