John Walsh (Collins, Cork) and Mark Millar (Cement, Drogheda) dominated the concluding stages of the Pitch and Putt Union of Ireland international trial series at McDonagh on Saturday.
Millar led by one shot after the first trial at Lakeside, Templemore but Walsh fired brilliant rounds of 45, 46 and 47 in windy conditions to claim the first of six automatic places on the Ireland international team to face Catalonia in Spain next April.
Walsh, who played on the last Irish team to tour Catalonia in 1997, finished on 227, just one ahead of Millar, whose final effort of 44 came up just one short.
Sean Downes (Stackallen) who captained the Ireland team last year, claimed the third place on 285 with William Buckley junior (Erry), Eddie Carey (Athgarvan), and Chris Scannell (Collins) taking the other automatic places. The final four wild cards will be announced in two weeks' time.
