Last year's Irish champion apprentice Jamie Spencer stole the limelight at Southwell yesterday when completing his first treble, at odds of more than 26 to 1, in Britain on Noufari, Calko and Oscar Pepper.

But there was a downside when he picked up a one-day suspension (January 24th) for using his whip above shoulder height on Calko.

David Barron, the trainer of Calko and Oscar Pepper said: "These are Jamie's first winners for me. Calko probably has a bit of ability but he does not want to give it away, Jamie gave him a good ride really."

Spencer (19), who rode a treble in his native country at the Curragh on Irish Derby day last year and also partnered Tarascon to victory in the Irish 1,000 Guineas in 1998, said: "I have now had 134 winners Flat and jumps.

"I am not too disappointed at getting the whip ban, the horse was starting to hang and I was trying to win and do my best for the owner and trainer - success does not come without a cost."

Former jockey Jamie Osborne came close to making a dream start to his training career when his second runner, Jump, was narrowly beaten. The colt led going into the final 100 yards but was caught close home by National Dance in the Cowslip Maiden.

Meanwhile, Adrian Maguire was suspended for five days for excessive use of the whip at Musselburgh. He broke the rules aboard Native Legend in the Ladbroke Casinos Manhattan Room Novices' Handicap Hurdle. Maguire's ban will run from January 24th-28th inclusive.

Ray York, still going strong at 66, made history at Santa Anita on Thursday by becoming the first jockey to ride in seven consecutive decades. However, there was no fairytale outcome with the veteran jockey partnering Culebra, a four-year-old maiden, to finish 10th in the finale.
