Torrens new president

Roy Torrens, the former Brigade and Ireland fast bowler, was voted in as president of the Irish Cricket Union at its a.g.m. in Dundalk yesterday. Torrens succeeds another eminent former international, Dermot Monteith.

Torrens won 30 international caps between 1964 and 1984. He is also a current national selector.

The new president-elect is Derek Scott, who served as the ICU's honorary secretary for 26 years until his retirement three years ago. This is a just reward for a devoted servant of Irish cricket, and it is also timely that his presidency will coincide with next year's International Cricket Conference (ICC) Trophy Tournament in Canada, when Ireland will be striving to qualify for the World Cup proper in 2003.

Murray Power has retired as honorary treasurer after 10 years service, and now will serve as joint membership secretary along with Michael Ryan. Ian Gourlay is the new honorary treasurer, while John Wright continues as honorary secretary.
