Title may hinge on derby

The way Killester are playing at the moment, it's hard to bet against them winning the ESB League title

The way Killester are playing at the moment, it's hard to bet against them winning the ESB League title. And whatever doubts do remain may well be shifted tomorrow when they play host to Notre Dame.

Having lost just four games, compared to six for Notre Dame, a win here for Killester would almost certainly decide the destination of the title with just five weekends to come. Victory here could push them four points clear.

Before that, however, Notre Dame are on court to face Tolka Rovers. That is one of three attractive derby games this evening, which also include Tralee against Killarney and the Demons against Neptune.

But is the Dublin derby that will have the most significant bearing on the league race. A win for Notre Dame would give them greater incentive for the meeting with Killester; should they lose, it would make tomorrow's game even more decisive.

Sligo have been keeping a low profile but are still in the hunt for the title, two points behind Killester but with two extra games played. They meet Tyrone on Sunday and, with a full squad available, should keep a close eye on the leaders.

UCD Marian and Waterford also have outside chances of sneaking the title should the top three start to crumble. The Dublin club face the Demons in tomorrow's live TV game from the National Arena (5.0, TG4) while Waterford welcome Tolka Rovers.

The women's league continues to be a fascinating battle between Tolka Rovers and the Wildcats. Tolka looked to have surrendered their title, only to bounce back last weekend with a crucial win over their Waterford rivals.

Still with a two-point advantage, the Wildcats will tomorrow be looking to defeat the Meteors, while Tolka are on court Sunday against Killester. It will be something of a shock if either side lose, leaving the title race undecided for at least another couple of weeks.
