Ballina opt out

BASKETBALL: The Ballina club announced last night that they would not be fulfilling tonight's Men's Super League clash with Belfast Star because of a row with national officials.

The club, who have recently expressed their dissatisfaction with the distances they have been forced to travel for away games, held an extraordinary general meeting last night and issued a statement which was strongly critical of Basketball Ireland. The club are angry that they were moved from the Northern to the Southern Conference this season, said the long journeys have eaten up their cash reserves.

But last night's statement focused on a statement issued by Basketball Ireland which claimed that the team was set to complete its programme of league games.

The club decided that pending the withdrawal of the statement it was unwilling to fulfil its Super League fixture with Belfast Star tonight. Talks are expected today in a bid to save the fixture.

St Andrews triumph

SCHOOLS' HOCKEY: St Andrews triumphed in the Leinster Schools' Junior A League Cup final at Grange Road yesterday, beating Loreto Beaufort 3-0, writes Mary Hannigan.

Harriet Kinsman gave St Andrews the lead in the first half, with Joanne Lavery doubling the advantage after the break and Chloe Watkins adding the third at the death.

But for great work from Beaufort goalkeeper Ruth Murphy and sweeper Emma Dougan, the margin of the victory might have been much greater, with midfielder Gillian Pinder and Laura Stephens in defence excelling for the winners.
