RACING: AMERICAN TEENAGE sensation Alexis Thompson confirmed her place as the most exciting upcoming talent in the women's game as she became the youngest professional winner of the Omega Dubai Women's Masters on Saturday.
The 16-year-old carded a final round 67 to win by four shots from South Africa’s Lee-Anne Pace at the Majlis course at Emirates Golf Club. South Korean amateur Amy Yang was a couple of months younger than Thompson when she won the ANZ Masters in 2006.
The youngest ever winner on the LPGA Tour when she triumphed at the Navistar Classic in Alabama back in September, Thompson held her nerve after bogeying the 17th with a brilliant shot to clear the water on the final hole for a simple tap-in birdie to finish a remarkable 15-under and win the €75,000 first prize.
“It feels amazing. This has been just a great tournament and I am looking forward to coming back,” said Thompson.
“I just tried to focus on my game. I did think about the victory when I had a five-shot lead, but throughout the whole day I was trying to play one shot at a time and never tried to get ahead of myself,” she added.
Ireland’s Rebecca Codd closed with a three-over 75 to finish the tournament on five over par.
