Carlos Tevez will fly to Britain on Tuesday to undergo a medical at Old Trafford with a view to completing his transfer to Manchester United.
The Argentina striker has been at the centre of a contractual wrangle which had delayed his proposed move from West Ham. But Tevez's adviser Kia Joorabchian last night released a statement confirming the transfer will go ahead.
It read: "On Tuesday Carlos Tevez will fly to Britain for a medical at Old Trafford as part of the process of his transfer to Manchester United. It is our understanding that all parties involved in the transfer are now satisfied the administrative issues will be settled in the next few days. We will not be adding further to this statement at this time."
However a West Ham spokesman said: "There is no deal in place regarding Carlos Tevez. He remains contracted to and registered with West Ham and there is no change to that situation. Obviously, a move cannot take place without the agreement of West Ham and the Premier League."
Alex Ferguson said: "I think we have got the player - we think he is our player and are very hopeful. The Premier League seem to be holding back, I think they probably want to make sure everything is transparent. We want that to be the case - we don't want a bad taste surrounding the transfer, we want it done cleanly.
Meanwhile, Cesc Fabregas will not follow Thierry Henry from Arsenal to La Liga. Real Madrid made an approach at the end of last week but the 20-year-old midfielder rejected them for the second consecutive summer and committed himself to Arsenal for the new season.
His agent, Joseba Diaz, last night confirmed Fabregas had made a final decision and that it was "impossible" for the Spain international to leave Arsenal this summer.
"Real Madrid want Cesc but he is very happy in London - he will stick with Arsene Wenger," said Diaz. "He is grateful for the interest that Madrid have shown but now he prefers to stay with Arsenal."
Wenger will be delighted by Fabregas's decision, but Arsenal have been annoyed by Madrid's tactics over the past week. The Spanish champions said they had held talks with Wenger about succeeding the former coach Fabio Capello - a claim flatly denied by Arsenal - and then talked about their admiration for Fabregas.
Bernd Schuster, on his first day as coach this week, praised the Catalan midfielder, and the club's president, Ramon Calderon, earmarked Fabregas, Chelsea's Arjen Robben and Milan's Kaka as the three players he wanted to bring to the Bernabeu as part of his election campaign. An approach was also made last summer but Fabregas pledged his loyalty to Wenger and agreed a new eight-year contract.
The central reason for Fabregas's contentment at Arsenal is Wenger, whom he regards as his mentor and the best person to oversee his development. "Arsene Wenger is a very, very important person in Cesc's life," said Diaz. "Arsenal was the club that found him and developed him when he is younger."
Arsenal were further boosted yesterday when they completed the signing of the France defender Bakary Sagna for £7 million from Auxerre. The 24-year-old has agreed a five-year deal and will provide competition at right-back for Emmanuel Eboue and Justin Hoyte, who has been linked with a move to Reading.
Sagna is a former team-mate of Abou Diaby at Auxerre as well as Gael Clichy and Mathieu Flamini in the under-21s. He said he had been "seduced" by the manager. "Arsene Wenger is a major reason why I have signed," he said.
Meanwhile, midfielder Yossi Benayoun has completed his move from West Ham to Liverpool. The 25-year-old, who is Israel's national captain, has signed for a reported £5 million in a four-year deal.
Reds boss Rafael Benitiez has described Benayoun as the ideal replacement for Luis Garcia, who joined Atletico Madrid for £4m earlier in the summer.
Tottenham are poised to take their summer spending towards £40 million after having an offer accepted for the Hertha Berlin midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng.
Martin Jol's bid of around £5 million was enough to see off interest from the Uefa Cup holders, Sevilla and, although personal terms have yet to be agreed, Boateng has signalled his desire to join Spurs.
A physical central midfielder, the 20-year-old has a Ghanaian father but declined the offer of a place in Ghana's World Cup squad last year. He's a member of Germany's Under-21 team.
Boateng joined Hertha Berlin in 1994 and has played 43 games since breaking into the first-team in 2005. If the deal is completed he would join Gareth Bale, Darren Bent, Younes Kaboul, Yuri Berchiche and Adel Taarabt and become Jol's sixth summer signing.
Roy Keane, meanwhile, suffered frustration in the market yesterday when the defender Chris Baird opted to link up with his former international manager Lawrie Sanchez at Fulham.
Sunderland had offer of around £3 million accepted for the Northern Ireland international but the 25-year-old defender, who was voted Southampton's player of the year last season, turned down their approach.
