Team Check: Selections and news

Waterford SH

Waterford SH

Waterford give a championship debut to James Murray in Sunday's Munster championship first-round game against Tipperary. Murray, from the Tallow club, takes over from Brian Greene who has emigrated to the US after holding down the left half back position in recent championships.

The side shows two changes from the team which lost to Galway in the National League semi-final last month. James O'Connor and Anthony Kirwan, full back and full forward that day, drop out to be replaced by Sean Cullinane and Stephen Frampton, respectively.

WATERFORD (SH v Tipperary): B Landers; T Feeney, S Cullinane, B Flannery; S Frampton, F Hartley, J Murray; T Browne, P Queally; D Shanahan, J Brenner, D Bennett; M White, K McGrath, P Flynn (capt). Subs: S Brenner, J O`Connor, S Curley, B O'Sullivan, S Prendergast, A Kirwan, P Fitzgerald, B Walsh, E Bennett.

Tipperary SH

Tipperary are expected to name their side tonight after training. Declan Ryan picked up a knock at the weekend but is expected to be fit for selection. Paul Ormonde and Liam Cahill are still carrying injuries but will be put through their paces at training before being considered for Sunday's match.

Down SF

Down footballers may be forced to postpone naming a team until Thursday. The big injury concern is full back Ciaran Byrne who has a strained quad muscle. Management is optimistic that he will be fit in time for Sunday's Ulster first-round game against Antrim but even if he is named in the side tonight, Byrne is likely to be still subject to a fitness test later in the week. Ross Carr, one of the survivors of the county's 1991 All-Ireland win, who was handed an eight-week suspension last week has actually served five of those weeks and will be available for the provincial semi-final with Derry should Down win this weekend.

Meanwhile opponents Antrim have a clean bill of health with only longterm injury absentee Kevin Madden definitely out of contention.

Limerick SH

Limerick have a few injury concerns ahead of Sunday week's Munster hurling championship semi-final, presumably against All-Ireland champions Cork who play Kerry this Saturday. Defender Jack Foley broke a finger in the league semi-final defeat by Tipperary and the injury has been slow to heal. He has had a pin inserted in the finger but Limerick are not optimistic that he will be available.

Meanwhile his brother Mark Foley pulled a hamstring in Saturday's challenge against Kilkenny, while full forward Brian Begley also has a hamstring problem, which caused his late withdrawal from the senior football team which lost to Cork in the championship at the weekend.

Cork SH

Cork, the All-Ireland champions, name their team tonight for Saturday's Munster first-round match against Kerry in Killarney. The only difficulty concerns last year's captain Mark Landers who has a slight hamstring pull. Otherwise last year's victorious team is expected to be fully available for selection.
