Swords rivals to clash at Mondello

MOTOR SPORT ROUND-UP:PETER McKENNA and Peter Barrable literally "cross swords" for Leinster Trophy and Formula Ford Championship honours at Mondello Park this weekend. The 20-year-old rivals are both from Swords, Co Dublin, and this year are winners of Motorsport Ireland driver-of-the-month awards.

McKenna has had the upper hand at Kirkistown this season, but Barrable was twice winner at the 40th anniversary Mondello meeting, the last time the Formula Fords raced on the international circuit. Past winners of the prestigious Leinster Trophy include three world champions, Mike Hawthorn, Ayrton Senna and Mika Hakkinen.

Prior to Sunday's 4pm start of the Leinster Trophy, a minute's silence will be observed in memory of David Byers, who died suddenly after competing in a motor race at Donington last Saturday.

Over 250 drivers compete in the busy, two-day Mondello programme in races for all the Irish championship classes.

Tim McNulty leads off Sunday's Clare stages from the Ennis start.

Anthony O'Halloran, Alan Ring and Eamon Daly in Mitsubishi Evo 9s lead the Group N challenge with Ring the clear leader with just two rounds to run.
