For the second year running the All-Ireland Father and Son Open Foursomes, sponsored by Guardian Life, was won by a home pair at Castle. It's an event that draws many pairs back year after year but inexperience certainly didn't prove a hindrance to Conor and Cillian Agnew who were competing for the first time. Playing off five and 17, they came through strokeplay qualifying and then managed six rounds of matchplay without ever having to go down the 18th.
Conor gave much of the credit to 16-year old Cillian whose short game was exemplary, or maddening if you happened to be the opposition. For example, when trouble loomed in the last 16, he holed from 50 feet on the 11th and then out of a bunker on the 12th.
Conor was the magician in the semi-final, chipping in for a vital win on the 16th, and they were both on form in the decider covering the front nine in two over par and eventually seeing off Shea and Declan Kennedy (Grange) at the 13th.
