The ILGU's decision to alter the concept of the Irish Senior Ladies' Championship, making it an Open event for the first time, has been rewarded as the entry for this year's event at Co Louth Golf Club next Monday and Tuesday includes several high profile Irish golfers and a host of serious overseas contenders.

The fact that the event takes place a week before the British Seniors Ladies' Championship in Wales has guaranteed a strong overseas presence, with competitors set to travel from Britain, Portugal, Spain, Denmark, Holland, America and Canada.

A home win is on the cards, however, and amongst the star attractions and red-hot favourites at the Baltray links will be Valerie Hassett (Ennis), and Mary McKenna (Donabate), winner of the Irish ladies Championship on eight occasions and Ireland's most capped Curtis Cup player.

Amongst the other home players in the 105-strong field who will be expected to perform strongly are Rhona Fanagan (Milltown), Mary Madden (Ballinasloe), Liz Kinsella (Woodbrook) and Catherine Carty (Tullamore).
