Payne Stewart, back on a course he likes after another miserable Masters, took a one-stroke lead after the second round at the $2.5 million MCI Heritage Classic at Hilton Head, South Carolina, yesterday.

The cut fell at one-over 143, and defending champion Davis Love (75) and 1988 winner Greg Norman (69) both made it right on the number.
