St David's, Greystones, emerged victorious from this forward battle in Carlow yesterday to claim a Section A quarter-final place in the Junior Cup.

Both sides deserve high praise for the manner in which they overcame the atrocious conditions of driving rain and a strong wind.

The St David's scrum-half and captain, Ross McKeon, proved their key figure. His clever chip over the Good Counsel defence saw him collect and cross for a try after 15 minutes. Then, seven minutes after the break, number eight Barry Holmes scored a second try.

But Good Counsel hit back within three minutes with a try from their number eight, Christopher Traynor, It was end-to-end stuff for the remainder of the match, but it was St David's who emerged to meet De la Salle of Skerries.
