McIlroy leads challenge against Scotland

Ireland arrived in south Wales with a pep in their step as they prepare for the start of the 2006 four-cornered amateur home international series at Pyle and Kenfig.

With the outstanding teenager Rory McIlroy at the top of the order they have every reason to feel in good heart as they take on reigning champions Scotland in the opening match of the championship today.

McIlroy has taken a shine to Pyle and Kenfig after two days' practice. "It is a great matchplay course, just ideal. It is important that with the greens as tricky as they are you land the ball on the correct side of the pin," he said.

"I have been playing really well this year and enjoying my golf. Now I am considering whether to go to college in the States but definitely to want to aim at next year's Walker Cup."

With him in the Irish line-up and the newly-crowned US Amateur Open champion Richard Ramsay playing for Scotland the Celtic clash should be a classic.

Bronze for Culliton

Garrett Culliton from Laois won a bronze medal in the F52 discus at the Paralympics World Athletics Championships in Assen, Holland, yesterday.

His throw of 16.09 was enough to secure a place on the podium and Ireland's third medal of the championships.

The competition took place late on Monday evening but the final result was not confirmed until yesterday due to a dispute over the classification of a US athlete.

Jason Smyth equalled the Paralympic world record of 10.96 seconds in the semi-final of the T13 100 meters, making the Derry teenager the fastest qualifier for today's final.
