Murray facing a scan to determine extent of injury

TENNIS: Andy Murray will have a scan to determine the extent of the elbow injury that hampered him in Saturday’s semi-final defeat by Rafael Nadal at the Monte Carlo Masters.

The Scot is due to play in the Barcelona Open this week, where he is the second seed behind world number one Nadal.

Murray has a bye in the first round and is therefore unlikely to be on court before tomorrow, giving him time to make a decision.

The 23-year-old will certainly hope he is fit enough to face either Juan Carlos Ferrero or Xavier Malisse in the second round after playing some of his best clay-court tennis in Monte Carlo.

Murray, who went into the tournament on a run of four successive defeats, breezed through his opening three matches before becoming the only man to take a set off Nadal as the Spaniard won his seventh title in a row in the principality. The British number one needed an injection prior to the match against Nadal.

Hendry ponders hanging up cue

SNOOKER: Stephen Hendry has revealed he could quit snooker this summer even if he wins the Betfred.com World Championship for an eighth time.

By his own admission he “got out of jail” against Joe Perry yesterday as he won 10-9 in the first round. He headed into the match knowing that defeat would knock him out of the top 16, where he has been a mainstay since 1988.

The prospect of having to play qualifying rounds for ranking events has never appealed to the man who made his World Championship debut 25 years ago. And he accepts it will become tougher to stay in the elite group, so will consider his future once his run in Sheffield is over.

Hendry said: “If I win this thing I might still contemplate retirement. I’ve got a big decision to make at the end of the season.”

Elsewhere, Ronnie O’Sullivan was in brilliant form in his match, twice threatening to plunder a maximum 147 break on his way to a 7-2 lead over Wales’ Dominic Dale at the end of the session.

Leinster swoop to sign Carr

RUGBY: Leinster are expected to announce shortly that they have signed Fionn Carr on a two- year deal.

The 25-year-old former Newbridge College, UCD and Blackrock wing joined Connacht from club rugby in 2008 and in his time with the western province went on to become their all-time leading try scorer with 34, breaking the existing mark of Conor McPhillips (32). Carr, an underage international, has also played at Ireland A level.

Henson suspended by Toulon

RUGBY: Gavin Henson’s one-week suspension for a breach of club discipline has thrown his Toulon future into doubt and cast a shadow over his World Cup aspirations.

Toulon would confirm only that Henson had broken the club’s code of conduct and would miss next Saturday’s crucial game against Perpignan. But reports in France stated the Wales international had fought with team-mates after last weekend’s 21-9 victory over Toulouse in Marseille.

Club president Mourad Boudjellal said a decision over Henson’s future would be taken next week, which suggests he could even have played his final game for Toulon.

Henson, who joined Toulon on a short-term contract in February, had been hoping to earn a new two-year deal.
