More ticket chaos for London 2012 organisers

OLYMPICS:London 2012 organisers were last night forced to suspend all ticket resales for the Olympics and Paralympics due to problems with their website.

In another ticketing embarrassment for organisers, the system was suspended only a few hours after being launched yesterday morning.

London 2012 said they had ordered ticket agents Ticketmaster to fix the problems before the system, where people could put up unwanted tickets for others to buy, is relaunched.

A London 2012 spokesman said: “We have told Ticketmaster to suspend the resale system whilst they investigate some issues customers have been experiencing.

“We want buying and selling Olympic and Paralympic tickets through Ticketmaster to be a good customer experience so we will reopen the site once Ticketmaster have resolved these issues.”

People trying to buy tickets were able to click onto apparently available tickets, but after several minutes were told these were not available. However, hours later, the website showed the same tickets still apparently available.

The London 2012 spokesman said this was due to tens of thousands of people trying to buy the tickets and a delay in those tickets being removed from the system once they had been purchased.

The resale window is open until February 3rd, and a further one million “contingency” tickets are due to go on sale in May.

Kallis leads South Africans home

CRICKET: A superb all-round performance by Jacques Kallis carried South Africa to a series-clinching 10-wicket win over Sri Lanka on the fourth day of the third and final Test at Newlands yesterday.

Having scored 224 in the South African first innings, Kallis claimed three for 35 to end an obdurate Sri Lankan second innings on 342, leaving the hosts with a nominal target of two runs to win.

Kallis also took four catches to equal the South African record for the most by an outfielder in an innings as well as the mark of six catches in a Test set by Albert Vogler back in 1909/10, which was matched by Bruce Mitchell in 1931/32.

South Africa’s victory brings to an end a run of four winless series at home dating back to 2008.

They were held up on the fourth day by the determined Thilan Samaraweera, who scored a defiant 115 not out in 325 minutes, off 215 balls, while Angelo Mathews scored 63.

Another term for captain Cooper

GAELIC FOOTBALL:Colm "Gooch'" Cooper has been given a second opportunity to achieve his ambition of leading Kerry to All-Ireland glory.

Cooper agonisingly missed out on lifting Sam Maguire last September when Dublin’s late rally prised the holy grail out of Kerry’s grasp.

But now the Killarney man will have a chance of atoning for the 2011 disappointment with his reappointment as Kerry team captain for this year’s campaign.

Flood to miss start of Six Nations

RUGBY: Leicester have confirmed that England outhalf Toby Flood is expected to miss the start of the Six Nations championship with a knee injury.

Flood (26) suffered ligament damage against Sale last weekend and he is set to be sidelined for four to six weeks, which also rules him out of the Tigers’ do-or-die Heineken Cup clash with Ulster.

England are already resigned to opening the defence of their Six Nations title against Scotland on February 4th without Leicester centre Manu Tuilagi.

Flood’s absence for the start of the Six Nations would open the way for Charlie Hodgson’s return at outhalf – potentially with one or both of his Saracens team-mates Brad Barritt and Owen Farrell in the centres.

Sale prop Andrew Sheridan will not be rushed back to international duty after undergoing a shoulder operation during the World Cup last year.

Shingler's future to be decided

RUGBY: The International Rugby Board will decide where Steven Shingler's international future lies after being asked by the Scottish and Welsh Rugby Unions to clarify issues over his eligibility.

Scotland coach Andy Robinson on Thursday named the 20-year-old in his 36-man panel for the Six Nations opener against England at Murrayfield and their meeting with Wales in Cardiff, believing Shingler to be available for selection through his Dumfries-born mother.

The London Irish centre or outhalf was born in Swansea, and the WRU have contended that he is not eligible to play for another nation after playing fullback for Wales under-20s against their French counterparts last year.

But Scotland say that Shingle had assured them that he had kept his eligibility open by refusing to sign a declaration committing himself to Wales.
