Dermot Weld and Pat Smullen teamed up for a 71 to 1 double with Indian Mystery and Copper Express on the opening evening of the three-day festival meeting at Bellewstown.

Smullen was seen at his best aboard Indian Mystery in the Maurice McAuley Memorial Maiden, giving the Indian Ridge filly a powerful drive on the far rail to hold off Gold Seeker by a short head.

The former dual apprentice champion moved onto the 33-winner mark - seven behind Mick Kinane in the title race - aboard Copper Express in the Murphy Sand and Gravel Maiden. The American-bred wore down Alexander Eliott in the final 100 yards to score by a head.

The jackpot pool of £5,127 is carried forward to this evening's meeting following a number of surprise results, notably the victory of Goldenhalo in the Oldbridge Concrete Handicap over a mile and three quarters. The Frances Crowley-trained gelding was hard ridden by Colm O'Donoghue to lead over two furlongs out and, despite swishing her tail, held the staying-on Adari by a neck.

"He needs a trip, and I will probably step him up to two miles," said Ms Crowley, who added: "He could make a juvenile hurdler."

Ray Cochrane will have to delay his return to race-riding until the end of the month. The jockey, who sustained burns, extensive bruising and an eye injury in the plane crash that claimed the life of the pilot last month, had hoped to be fit for the start of the July meeting at Newmarket next Tuesday.

Cochrane rode out for trainer James Fanshawe last week but has been told by Jockey Club chief medical adviser Dr Michael Turner not to rush his comeback. His agent Andrew Gilbert said yesterday: "Dr Turner has given him another three weeks."

Sunshine Street finished a creditable third to Dark Moondancer in the nine-furlong American Handicap on the Hollywood Park Independence Day card on Tuesday. Coming off a win in the San Juan Capistrano Handicap (1m 6f), the former Noel Meade runner made a bold attempt to make all.

However, Dark Moondancer, having stalked him throughout, took his measure and won by a length and a half under Chris McCarron. Sunshine Street battled on gamely and it was only by a neck that he missed out on second spot to Sardaukar.

Takarian, another former Irish runner, found himself blocked and was last of the sextet.
