SHELBOURNE continued their relentless pursuit of league leaders St Patrick's Athletic when they secured a crucial victory over fellow championship contenders Sligo Rovers at the showgrounds on Saturday night.

The only goal of a surprisingly low key contest arrived in the 66th minute and was the product of Shelbourne's most incisive attack of the evening.

Gary Howlett and Tony Sheridan unhinged the Sligo defence with a swift interchange of passes and when the ball was played into the path of Stephen Geoghegan, he unleashed a powerful shot to the roof of the net.

How Sligo must have wished they had a striker of Geoghegan's quality. They dominated the exchanges throughout the first half, created a string of clear cut chances but yet failed to seriously test goalkeeper Alan Gough.
