1. The Dutch find the breakthrough in the 24th minute. Dennis Bergkamp lifts a pass into the penalty area, where Patrick Kluivert controls it at full stretch before poking the ball past Ivica Kralj.
2. Kluivert scores his second seven minutes before half-time. This time, it is Edgar Davids who supplies the perfect pass into the penalty area, where Kluivert drifts off his marker and slides the ball past Kralj with a clinical first-time shot.
3. Kluivert's hat- trick comes less than six minutes after the restart. A Bergkamp free-kick from the left is punched clear but finds its way to Bosvelt on the right wing. He picks up the ball, storms to the by-line and crosses for Kluivert to net his third.
4. His fourth arrives three minutes later. Boudewijn Zenden charges into the penalty area. There is a hint of handball, but play is waved on and he cuts a pass to Kluivert, who adjusts brilliantly to volley number four.
5. Marc Overmars adds the fifth with a 78th-minute volley from 20 yards to open his account in the tournament.
6. Overmars's second comes directly from more misfortune for Philip Cocu. The midfielder needs treatment after colliding with his own post then sees a ferocious drive rebound into the path of Overmars who claims his second in the 90th minute.
Odd man out
