Gene Sauers tumbled from his opening round 64 to a 73 to lose scoring the lead in the Texas Open in San Antonio yesterday to Australian Bradley Hughes - who matched Sauers's feat with a 64 of his own. Hughes, who shot a 69 on the first day of the $1.4 million tournament, had a two-round total of 133 to lead American Duffy Waldorf by a single shot going into the third round.
Meanwhile, American Ryder Cup captain Tom Kite has said he couldn't be happier with his team, wouldn't change a thing and thinks this could be one of the best U.S. Ryder Cup squads - yet the soft spoken captain insists the Americans are underdogs.
"This is a good one," Kite said of his team, stopping short of pinning the tag of `great' on his daunting dozen just yet.
"I'm certainly pleased with this team. There's nobody on this team that I didn't wish was on. I've got a very strong team."
It is a young but exceedingly talented team that Kite will take on board the Concorde on Monday as they head for Valderrama. The squad includes US Masters champion Tiger Woods, British Open winner Justin Leonard and familiar faces such as Fred Couples, Tom Lehman and PGA champion Davis Love.
