IRISH number one Derek Ryan suffered the wrath of Jansher Khan yesterday in Cardiff when the world squash champion and British Open title holder proved too strong for the Dubliner in their opening round match.

Ryan beat the 28-year-old Pakistani in a league match two weeks ago but his opponent had used the intervening time well. A fitter, stronger and faster Khau got the better of the Irish champion 15-7, 15-6, 15-9 in a match lasting 58 minutes.

"I felt I was with him in every point but he kept winning them which is pretty hard to argue with," said Ryan afterwards.

Ryan will stay on in Cardiff to train for the rest of the week before turning his attention to the French Open on Monday week.
