Check out Irish surfing. Following the conclusion of the World Surfing Games the Irish surf team have found themselves in the company of the elite top 16 nations in the world. As a result, the bodyboard team has been invited to the inaugural World Bodyboard Championships in Sandy Beach, Hawaii, next summer. Bryan McAuley's sixth place and Tanya Ward's seventh place in the World Games gives Ireland a significant standing at world level, so much so that Ireland has applied to host the World Championships in 2004. What augurs well for Ireland's bid is that the Irish association's president, Brian Britton, has been awarded the Honour Medallion, surfing's biennial international award to the individual who has made the most significant contribution to the growth and development of surfing worldwide.
